It is said that everybody has a story to tell. Whether it be about how you met your partner, what happened to you at the weekend, or how your last holiday was, we do all have a story. Some of us have more than one story to tell. Some of those stories might not be about ourselves or anyone in our lives. They could be made up. To do this there is one very important tool that you must use when writing fiction. We have been given this amazing tool, and I feel not many of us use it as much as we should. Its called imagination.
Our imagination is one of the greatest tools we have! Think back to every fiction book you have read, Dickens, JK Rowling, Shakespeare, Jane Austen, all had to use their imagination to come up with some of the worlds most famous stories. Just think of some of the great stories out there. Star Wars, Batman, The Wizard of Oz, Bond, all had to come from somebody using their imagination. Even Disney! Some of the greatest stories ever told. I know that Disney have taken classics and made them their own, but it still took imagination and creativity to draw and make those films.
So, the key ingredient to telling a good story is imagination. Those that don’t use it will only ever tell stories about themselves, or repeat ones that others have told them. The people that choose to use their imagination and give it no boundaries will go on to achieve great things. Everything around you was created because somebody had the imagination to think it up. This laptop I’m writing on, the buildings around me, a theme park, a car, the iPhone, every single item was made because somebody used their imagination.
There is a point to this blog post. I have imagination, and I intend to use it. I’ve had a story in my head for years, and its not real life. It is fiction. It is fantasy. I’ve created an entire world. I’ve created different races within that world. There are mountains, and lakes, oceans and forests. There are those that go about their everyday life in little villages and towns. There are those that rule the lands from their great castles and towers. There are battles between those that do whats right and those that linger in the darkness. There is love, and hate, but most importantly, there is magic.
This is a story that began over sixteen years ago, and it has taken me that long to realize its something I should share. Sixteen years of story, all locked up in my head. I keep saying I wish I could plug my head into a printer and just let it come out. Unfortunately there is no such device, and I will not hang around and wait for one to be made. Instead I am writing it. Its going to be a long process, and I know there are some of you that want it read it now, but all good things come to those who wait. I want to finish it as soon as possible, and at the same time, I don’t want to rush it. I owe this story the time it deserves to write it correctly, not hurry it, and make it something spectacular.
So wish me luck guys! This is not an easy task I have set myself, but then think how boring life would be if everything was easy.
